In Memoriam István Széchenyi (1791-1860)
Our university named by István Széchenyi in 1986. Count István Széchenyi’s spiritual heritage is also a Hungarikum, and moreover Győr-Moson-Sopron County’s inharitance as well. All the three historical cities were connected with one of the greatest person in the age of reforms.
István Széchenyi had more stories with Győr. In 1809, he participated in the battle of Győr against Napoleon. He stayed in Győr on the last day in Hungary during travelling to Döbling (Austria). And in 1860 (the year of his death), the general assembly of Győr named after him Central-Europe’s one of the most beautiful baroque square, Széchenyi Square.
Our library has stored the museum-pieced books of Széchenyi in two vitrines on downstairs. The oldest piece: István Széchenyi – Luvakrul (published in 1828)
The exhibition is open and freely visited in the opening hours of the library.
