Enrolment
I am not a student or lecturer at Széchenyi István University. Can I still use the library?
Yes. As an external reader, you need to request a SZE Library Visitor Card and then you can use the library after you have registered in person. For loaning, enrolment is required. Fees

I enrolled in the Apáczai Faculty Library. Do I have to register separately for the Central Library to use it?
No. Regardless of where the registration is made, it is valid for all libraries of the EKL network (Central Library, Library of Apáczai Csere János Faculty, Library of the Ferenc Deák Ferenc Faculty of Law and Political Sciences, Library Albert Kázmér Mosonmagyaróvár Faculty).
What documents are required for enrolment?
Documents required for enrolment:
- identity card or passport or driving licence;
- address card (for persons with a Hungarian address);
- university card (student, staff or library card);
- in the case of persons under 18 years of age, a declaration of surety completed by an adult guarantor holding appropriate identity documents;
- proof of entitlement to a discount (student card, pensioner card, disabled person).
Do I always have to bring the plastic card with me?
Yes. You will need it to access the entrance gates and to use the card for loaning and other services.
What should I do if my card is lost/damaged?
Go to https://kartya.sze.hu/ to suspend the lost/damaged card and then apply for a new card.
Loan, extension
Can I loan any book?
No. Encyclopaedias in the Central Library and academic notes in the Reference Library are not available for loan. The entire holdings of the Library of Faculty of Law can only be used on site. In the Library of Apáczai Csere János Faculty, the holdings of the Reference Library and the Reading Room are not available for loan.
Can I loan books marked with a red or green stripe?
At the Central Library, books marked with a red stripe can be loaned for 1 day or a weekend, and books marked with a green stripe can be loaned for 1 week. Books marked with a red stripe cannot be loaned in the Library of Apáczai Csere János Faculty.
I want to loan the books, but I need someone else to take them for me. Is that possible?
No, everyone can only loan books in their own name. But anyone can return the books they have borrowed.
Where can I find out when my loans expire?
On hunteka.sze.hu, you can see the current loans by logging in to your user account or by logging in to the eCard application. You will also receive an email warning before the expiry date to the email address you provided when you registered.
How can I extend my loan period online?
On hunteka.sze.hu, you can extend the loan period for borrowed documents by logging into your user account or by logging into the eCard application, if the loan period has not expired and there is no reservation for the document. The loan period can be extended once.
What username and password can I use to log in to my user account on hunteka.sze.hu?
The username (barcode) is always the card number on the plastic card. The password is:
- for readers enroled before January 2024: the number of the library card,
- for readers enroled after January 2024: the date of birth (without separators).
When do I have to pay a late fee and how much?
If you have not returned or renewed the book before the loan period expires, you will have to pay a late fee. The amount of the late fees is available under Fees.
Can I pay by credit card?
Yes, you can pay by cash or credit card.
What should I do if I have lost a book I have borrowed?
The reader is obliged to replace lost or damaged documents with an example of the same edition or to reimburse the value as determined by the EKL staff.
Search
I need some books and I want to know if there are any in the library. Do I have to come in person?
No. The library's online catalogue can be accessed from anywhere, all you need is internet access.
How can I find literature for my thesis or assignments?
A reference librarian is available to help you during all library opening hours. For subject-related bibliographic research, registered readers can also use our Info-Share online information service, which can be found on the ONLINE INFORMATION SERVICE (INFO-SHARE) page.
Can I only access the online catalogue from the library's machines?
No. The library's online catalogue can be accessed from anywhere, all you need is internet access.
How do I find the book I want from the catalogue on the shelf?
If you click on the "Item" button in the online catalogue, you will find the "Store sign" of the book. "Permanent Location" indicates the member library and "Collection" indicates its location within the member library. For help, click on the Map icon. The numbers on the side of the bookshelves and the shelf markings on the spine of the book will help you find your book. You can access the stock items by filling in a stock request form.
Can I only use the databases from the library machines?
No. The eduID system provides remote access to the databases and services of the University and the University Library and Archives. However, there are some databases that can only be accessed from the library. A list of current databases can be viewed by clicking HERE.
I need a journal article, how can I find it?
If you know the exact publication details of the journal, you can check whether we have the issue or volume in paper form in our library by searching for the title of the journal in the online catalogue.
If you can't find it in the catalogue or don't know the exact publication details, you can search the table of contents of Hungarian-language scientific journals on matarka.hu and in some cases you can access the full text of the article.

I need a journal article, but I can't find it in the library or in the databases. What should I do?

Thesis
I can't log in to the Thesis uploading interface. Who can I contact?
First of all, you should contact the administrator of your department. If he or she cannot help you solve the problem, you can contact our colleague at 96/613-719 or email konyvtar@sze.hu.
How can I access previous theses from SZE?
You can request printed theses before 2015 from the stock by filling in a stock request form.
- Theses published after 2015 are archived online in the university repository (SZEREP).
- Theses published between 2015 and 2022 can only be read on dedicated library computers.
- Theses published after 2023 are freely accessible to anyone.
Can I loan your theses?
No, theses cannot be borrowed.
Can I print or photocopy theses?
No. You are not allowed to copy theses, dissertations or standards. The contents of theses may only be annotated by hand and may not be reproduced by any other means.
Other useful information
Do you have a cloackroom?
There are lockable lockers at the entrance to the Central Library where you can put your coats and bags.
Can I take my bag into the library?
Yes, you can bring your bag into the library.

What opportunities are there for individual and/or group work in the library?
The research rooms and media boxes on the 2nd floor of the Central Library are free of charge for enroled readers. Keys to the single-user research rooms can be obtained at the circulation desk on the ground floor. Keys to the media boxes can be requested at the information desk on the 1st floor. There are also study boxes in the basement, which also provide a quiet place to study.
How can I use the library computers?
There are nearly 200 workstations in the Central Library and several in the member libraries, which are free to use after logging in with your own username and password. You can find the login information by clicking HERE.
I am disabled. How can I use the library?
The EHL uses all the means at its disposal to ensure that its services are uniformly accessible to all. The Central Library building has a barrier-free entrance, a barrier-free lift and barrier-free toilets. There are guide rails and warning signs on the floor to assist the blind and partially sighted. There are 2 reading devices in the 2nd floor media box to assist library users and the library website is also available in a low vision version.
